change is expensive, momentum is free
Change is expensive. It costs energy, willpower, and time. But what if there was a way to make it effortless?
Inertia is resistance to change in motion. Massive change demands tremendous energy—energy we often don't have.
Brute-forcing ourselves into change is an inelegant algorithm. With infinite energy, anything is possible. The crux of the game is that we don’t have infinite energy. We must leverage what little we have to affect the change we want.
So how do we alchemize inertia into momentum? How do we break through resistance?
We must collaborate with the forces of our life, engaging in a dance between the cohabitating realities of psychology, neurology, and time.
Think like an algorithm—but a messy, human one. A large language model doesn’t get smarter overnight. It improves one iteration at a time—just like you.
We are not as fast as supercomputers, but we can borrow their principles: small iterations drive improvement, and automating those iterations leads to remarkable changes in our abilities.
Habits are human automation. When we show up each day to a task, we complete an iteration, like an LLM in training. LLMs get things wrong most of the time during training, but through enough cycles—adjusting parameters as they go—they improve.
The trick is getting the human animal to automation. When we give habits meaning, they become rituals—something sacred, not just scheduled.
Ritual is a form of worship, a drawing closer to something greater than ourselves. Like the pull of the tide, we can show up each day, drawn forward by meaning.
We must also get out of our own way. We must stop putting up arbitrary rules and roadblocks that keep us from showing up. The weather and conditions are rarely perfect. Showing up despite the circumstances, despite even our own performance and capabilities, is the psychological breakthrough that allows us to settle into the automation of our craft.
Minimal energy, exercised and punctuated day by day, leads us to momentum. Like wind in the sails, the more we spend energy over time, the more our sailboat glides along. Birds are not constantly flapping their wings—they use the wind to propel them upward.
Here’s my invitation: when you find yourself wanting a change, ask yourself—what's the smallest incremental action I can take today? How can I do something small each day, with minimal effort, to manifest the change I want?
Change isn’t about force. It’s about flow. Train like an algorithm. Move with the wind. And before you know it, momentum takes over.
