grab bag todos

Have a million low priority tasks? Make a grab-bag todo list.

Modern life offers a never-ending buffet of things to do—most of them unappetizing. The tasks are never-ending: update the address here, cancel that subscription there, make sure your car registration is up to date, pay this and that bill -- and on and on.

Let's start with the bad news: there's no end to this todo list. There will always be an infinite number of things to do and problems to solve. If not for your life, for a child, a loved one, a pet. The administration of our lives is endless.

The good news is that not everything needs to be done at once. But how do we remember it all?

A todo list on a piece of paper or the equivalent digital scratch pad isn't gonna cut it. I don't know about you, but I lose things all the time. Where you store information is as important as the information itself. What good is something you write down if you can't retrieve it?

Here's where the grab-bag approach comes in. The idea is that this is a repository for low priority tasks. You might get to them someday—or not. But when you're blocked on a high priority task -- like completing a deadline for your job or preparing for a performance -- you may still have an itch to get something done. Your grab bag is where you go -- pick one up, and go for it.

The items here should be fairly quick and easy. An errand that you can put off, signing up for something you've been meaning to, or clearing out an old email inbox. They're not urgent, and they're not that important. But getting them done will provide some value to your life.

What kind of tasks belong in the grab bag?

  • Recycle that pile of old receipts
  • Update your Amazon delivery address
  • Cancel that free trial you forgot about
  • Delete duplicate photos
  • Clean out a single junk drawer”

So here's my invitation: create your own grab-bag of todos that you can pick up. Declare it to yourself—and remind yourself that these are non urgent, low priority tasks. And then keep them in a single place -- a local document, Notion, or wherever you know you can return to easily. The next time you got some time in between high priority tasks, you can tackle one of these.

Grab that bag and go.
