routines are the antidote
Distractions are the sickness. Routines are the antidote.
I am a creature of habit, and even a slight disruption can throw off my day. Habits automate decision-making, clearing away a multitude of micro-decisions that deplete our limited reserves of willpower and mental energy. Start the day deciding where to get coffee, what to eat, what to do—and you're already behind.
This morning, I skipped my usual routine and felt the effects immediately. My brain feels frazzled, thrown into work mode too quickly, without the proper priming.
I always recommend starting the day focused on yourself, even at the most basic level. Wake up, make your bed, wash your face, brush your teeth. Make breakfast, meditate, write. Follow your routine before diving into any externally accountable task.
You may find yourself calmer amid the chaos.
